WITH 2023 marking the 50-year anniversary of The Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham/Wakefield, the North Shore branch of the life-changing youth mentoring program is celebrating in style; with its sixth annual ‘Dodging for Dollars’ ultimate dodgeball fundraiser tournament.
Dubbed “the largest dodgeball fundraising tournament in New England” this year’s extravaganza -which will take place from Sunday April 23rd through Friday May 5th- boasts over 40 teams and 500+ players, all participating in the unified effort to raise funds for the The Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham/Wakefield.
“The games will be groovy, bodacious, fresh, kewl, and definitely lit,” Boys & Girls Club commissioner Anthony Guardia says of this year’s tourney. “Most importantly though, you’ll be helping kids when they need it the most.”
To commemorate the 50-year anniversary, this year’s dodgeball tournament is taking on a ‘Dodging Through the Decades’ theme. Each participant that raises over $200 will also earn a fashionable tee-shirt showing off the decade they represent.
Mark Kini, owner of Boston Chauffeur and team captain of his company team, has participated in ‘Dodging for Dollars’ since its inception.
“This is one of my favorite charity fundraisers each year,” Kini says. “For me, youth mentoring is something very close to my heart, and who doesn’t want to compete in a good dodgeball tournament? It gets competitive out there on the court!”
One of the reasons, Kini says, he chooses to be involved with The Boys & Girls Club is because he sees the positive impact the organization has with youth that benefit from the timely guidance and activities provided.
“I wish these programs were around when I was a kid,” Kini reflects. “There were times growing up that I strayed in the wrong direction, and created difficult situations for myself. I could have definitely benefited from the mentoring of a Boys & Girls Club.”
While most teams are comprised of companies and individuals entering together, Guardia says there is space for participants to register and to be placed on a team with an open spot. The mission, he points out, is to include as many people in possible that want to help raise money for an amazing program that has been making a positive difference in the lives of our local youth for fifty years strong now.
