Hosted by Boston Bruins legend Ray Bourque and his wife Christiane, this premier gala brings together hockey royalty, philanthropic leaders, and local heroes for an unforgettable evening.

The singular, vital mission? Honoring the legacy of late ALS hero Pete Frates and raising final, crucial funds to cross the ultimate finish line—finding a cure for ALS.

Two Captains, One Cause: The “Why” Behind the Ball

The blueprint for the Captain’s Ball was forged in a moment of profound grief and shared purpose. While the Bourques originally launched their foundation in 2017 to unite their family’s lifelong commitment to regional charity, their path permanently intertwined with the Frates family.

Ray Bourque first met Pete Frates shortly after Pete’s life-altering ALS diagnosis, when the former Boston College baseball star officiated a charity alumni hockey game Bourque was playing in. The two local legends immediately connected, mapping out fundraising ideas over a table at Bourque’s North End restaurant, Tresca.

When Pete passed away in December 2019, Ray and Christiane Bourque attended the funeral and shared a pivotal moment of clarity. They decided to pivot their annual gala entirely toward ALS research and keeping Pete’s legacy alive. Rebranded as the Captain’s Ball—a nod to Bourque’s iconic tenure wearing the “C” for the Bruins and Frates’ captaincy on the BC baseball diamond—the event officially debuted in 2022 to spectacular acclaim.

Pete Frates embodied a life of service before his 2012 ALS diagnosis at age 27, famously declaring that his illness would lead to a cure. He co-created the viral Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, raising $220 million and transforming ALS research funding globally. Today, events like the Captain’s Ball continue this momentum toward finding a medical breakthrough.
